At Brogan Knife Sharpening, we want to make sure the most important tool in your kitchen stays safe - your fingers!
Not only is it nice to cut greens (rather than simply make lines on them), it is safer too! Always follow safe knife-handling and keep your fingers out of the way, but keep that blade sharp and the knife will always go the direction you were intending. Plus, you can stop squashing all of the tomatoes you are trying to cut!
There are many videos of amazing knife work that you can find on YouTube. We won’t bother linking them here, as we know you can find them - but there are three basics that you always keep in mind:
1.) Use a sharp knife. That is not the sales person talking, it is important. It may be an overused statistic, but it's true - more injuries happen with a dull knife than a sharp one.
2.) Keep your eyes on what you are doing. Never cut if you can‘t see where your hands are. Don’t look away from what you are cutting.
3.) Keep the proper mindset. Nearly all injuries are the result of mindlessness, rushing, over-exertion or frustration. Recognize if you are feeling any of these and let them be warnings to you! If you have made three attempts to cut that butternut squash and that stupid thing still isn’t cutting and dinner is going to be late and now you are putting all of your weight on it…. Heads up!! An accident is potentially brewing there.
